Episode 04 | The Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro
In Burkina Faso, half of the population lives below the poverty line, permanent jobs are rare – at the same time, there is a lack of qualified specialists. Girls and women are particularly affected. TÜV AUSTRIA has been supporting the construction of the Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro technical school since 2019 and donated €15,000 again this year.
The project was initiated by the mayor of Nanoro Jaques Konkobo and the Maria Enzersdorf architect Peter Klein, both graduates of HTL Mödling. The project is part of the ICEP association’s RéCouVrer program, which strengthens the resilience of vulnerable people in West Africa.
The Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro currently has 438 pupils in the 1st and 2nd courses, 178 of whom are female and 260 male. 160 pupils will start lessons this school year, 62 girls and 98 boys. There are 87 pupils in year 3 who are preparing for their final exams in May 2026 .
All students complete internships in local companies to prepare for entry into technical professions.
The Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro currently employs 41 apprentices, with 78 apprenticeships planned when it is fully operational.
Construction activities are continuing, with an urgently needed wall and a guardhouse in the planning stage and a new contract with construction companies about to be signed. Bricks have already been produced in the third quarry by the pupils of the Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro.
The terror problem in the north, on the border with Mali, is once again acute. Due to the security situation, lessons for year 3 are currently taking place in Ouagadougou. RéCouVrer has therefore been expanded to include help for refugees, especially women.
