Surface Drainage: Planning of Infiltration and Retention Systems

Infiltration is primarily used for the drainage of surface water from urban areas and traffic zones (surface drainage), especially when no suitable sewer system or receiving water body is available. This method is also employed to counteract the reduction in groundwater recharge caused by surface sealing and to approximate the natural water cycle.

Even before precipitation reaches the ground, it accumulates substances from fine particles and aerosols in the atmosphere. Additionally, rainwater can carry pollutants washed off from contaminated surfaces. Therefore, pre-treatment of the water may be necessary before infiltration.

Closely linked to infiltration systems are retention measures, which aim to temporarily store rainwater and then release it in a controlled manner for infiltration.
