Airport Carbon Accreditation: GHG in Aviation
The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) is an internationally endorsed standard, launched by Airports Council International (ACI) in 2009, that independently evaluates and recognizes airports’ efforts to manage and reduce their GHG emissions.
It is an institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification programme for airports that independently assesses and recognizes the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions through 7 levels of certification.
Key aspects
- Carbon Emissions Management: ACA provides a structured framework for airports to measure, manage, and reduce their carbon emissions across different operational scopes.
- Accreditation Levels: The program offers seven progressive levels of accreditation—from Footprint measurement to achieving Net Zero — each recognizing deeper commitments to carbon management, reduction, neutrality, and net-zero alignment.
- Transparency and Accountability: ACA requires clear documentation and third-party verification, ensuring that carbon management efforts are credible, consistent, and aligned with global climate goals.
- Continuous Improvement: The program encourages long-term emissions reduction strategies, stakeholder engagement, and integration of renewable energy and offsetting practices.
Applicability
The Airport Carbon Accreditation program is applicable to all airports worldwide, particularly those:
- Seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and improve operational sustainability.
- Committed to aligning with global climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and Net Zero Roadmaps.
- Aiming to demonstrate environmental leadership and gain recognition for carbon reduction efforts.
- Required by regulatory bodies, airline partners, or stakeholders to track and report GHG performance transparently.
