Acoustic investigation of battery storage systems
Security, legal certainty, and acceptance for your project.
Industrial battery storage systems serve to stabilize the grid. They can also be used to reduce costs and ensure security of supply in companies. The market is growing and encompasses various sizes, from smaller commercial systems to large gigawatt-hour storage facilities worldwide. But if sound insulation is lacking, conflicts cannot be ruled out.
Why is a noise and immission assessment crucial for you?
- Approval eligibility: Compliance with all legal requirements (e.g., ÖAL Guideline No. 3-1:2008, OVE/ÖNORM, construction and environmental law) is a prerequisite for the approval and trouble-free operation of your system. Authorities are increasingly demanding soundproofing certification, especially for systems located near residential areas.
- Acceptance and location loyalty: A professional noise protection report protects against complaints from the neighborhood and ensures the long-term acceptance of your battery storage facility.
- Cost-effectiveness: Targeted noise reduction measures help you avoid costly retrofits and operational interruptions.
What can you expect from TÜV AUSTRIA?
Our service portfolio for operators of battery storage systems in large-scale PV plants:
- Acoustic survey:
Determination of the assessment levels at the measuring positions and the properties or buildings in the neighborhood.
Comparison of the project forecast with the actual situation derived from calculations and analysis according to the method of ÖAL Guideline No. 3-1:2008. Proposal of operational immission limits and structural noise protection measures. - Acoustic investigation:
Preparation of a technical report including noise maps and tables. - Consulting on sound insulation measures:
Development of individual solutions (e.g., structural sound insulation measures, operating time management, technical optimizations).
Support in communication with authorities and neighbors. - Legal certainty and documentation:
Reports in accordance with current standards and guidelines.
Support with submission and approval procedures.
Want to know more? Emissions – explained by experts:
From an emissions perspective, it should be noted that industrial battery storage systems are usually actively ventilated by powerful fans. This is necessary to ensure efficient operation even at elevated ambient temperatures. Even at cooler temperatures, such as during rapid charging at night, considerable waste heat is generated, which must be dissipated by the ventilation systems. In some cases, the systems may also be running at full capacity during periods of low traffic.
When several components such as battery storage systems, inverters, and transformers are combined in a single system group, the individual noise sources add up. In such cases, total sound power levels of over 106 dB are possible, which can significantly radiate into the environment without suitable countermeasures. An example shows that with such sound power, even at a distance of 120 meters from the system, project-related sound pressure levels of up to LAeq = 48 dB can occur.
