Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage
Capture, (Transport), Utilization & Storage ofCO2
Reducing energy consumption, increasing efficiency, and decarbonization (defossilization) are absolute priorities for economic competitiveness and achieving climate goals. Despite the replacement of fossil fuels, some industrial and economic sectors cannot completely reduce their emissions because chemical processes involving raw materials (e.g., lime burning; waste incineration; biomass combustion) inevitably produce CO2 emissions. To prevent this CO2—which is difficult or impossible to avoid—from escaping into the atmosphere,
carbon capture is a key component of decarbonization.

Carbon Management Strategy
In June 2024, the Council of Ministers adopted theAustrian Carbon Management Strategy (CMS). The CMS outlines options for addressing the remaining hard-to-abate or unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions
(“hard-to-abate”).
CCS – Carbon Capture & Storage
CCU – Carbon Capture & Utilization
Particularly at point sources (industrial sites), established methods make it possible to capture unavoidable CO2 emissions, transport them, and store them geologically (CCS –Carbon Capture and Storage) or utilize them in such a way that they are permanently removed from the atmosphere (CCU –Carbon Capture and Utilization).
The CCUS infrastructure required for this consists of facilities for capture, collection, transport, processing, and storage. The necessary technologies and processes are already available and, for the most part, have been proven over many years.
