"Certification of biogas and biomethane (green methane): Documentation of sustainability requirements in accordance with EU sustainability criteria"

Certification proves the environmental friendliness of biogas and biomethane (green methane)

Biogas (biomethane) can be obtained from sewage sludge, agricultural waste, and food production.

Gas supply companies are already increasing the proportion of biomethane in the natural gas network. With certification, we offer gas suppliers the opportunity to document that their gas products contain a defined, balanced proportion of biomethane from renewable energy sources.

Certification helps you to identify your products as environmentally friendly. According to the EU Energy Directive, gas suppliers must prove that the production of the raw materials used complies with specified sustainability requirements. This is necessary in order to take advantage of government subsidies and benefit from tax relief.

Our service portfolio

  • Biomethane certification: Suppliers of biomethane additive products for end customers have the opportunity to increase the transparency and thus the acceptance of their product through certification according to the TÜV AUSTRIA “Green Methane” standard.
  • Biogas certification according to EU sustainability criteria: The EU directive on the promotion of renewable energies has established criteria for the sustainability of liquid and gaseous biofuels. Austria has transposed this directive into national law (Sustainable Agricultural Raw Materials Ordinance – NLAV and Fuel Ordinance 2012). In order for plant operators to be able to count biomethane towards the biofuel quota or apply for tax relief, they are required to have the sustainability of production verified by an independent third party.
  • Biogas assessment according to the Green Electricity Act (ÖSG):
Depending on the type of biogas production, biogas processing, and feed-in, a certain remuneration claim may arise under the ÖSG if adequate evidence is provided when withdrawing from the natural gas grid. The experts at TÜV AUSTRIA will help you to realize the subsidy.
  • Regenerative methane production according to the power-to-gas process: With the “Green Methane” certification standard, the regenerative production of methane according to the power-to-gas process can also be certified.
