Corrosion monitoring
Traditionally, the corrosion rate of a system is monitored through periodic inspections (such as wall thickness measurement using ultrasonic testing—UT) or by using corrosion coupons (test plates). These techniques typically determine an average corrosion rate over the entire exposure period. In addition to quantitative data, corrosion coupons also provide valuable information about the underlying corrosion mechanism. TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium (formerly METALogic) supports you in the supply and evaluation of corrosion coupons.
For applications requiring real-time corrosion information, online monitoring systems offer a solution. A commonly used technique is LPR (Linear Polarization Resistance). An LPR probe consists of three electrodes—a working, counter, and reference electrode—which are placed in the medium. By applying a small potential change and measuring the resulting current, the corrosion rate can be determined directly.
In addition to LPR, there are several other corrosion monitoring techniques, such as:
- ER (Electrical Resistance)
- EFM (Electrochemical Frequency Modulation)
- EN (Electrochemical Noise)
Each technique has specific advantages and limitations. In many cases, multiple techniques are combined into a single integrated and intelligent monitoring system. Online corrosion monitoring is particularly valuable in situations where anomalies or process disruptions must be detected quickly, allowing for timely intervention to limit damage. Typical applications include:
- cooling water systems
- wastewater treatment
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium combines practical experience with knowledge gained from European research projects, among other sources. This ensures you can count on a knowledge-driven approach. We not only ensure the correct installation of measurement probes and systems but also support you in interpreting measurement data and translating it into concrete actions within your asset integrity strategy.
