CORSIA – Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation
CORSIA, established by ICAO and governed in the EU under Regulation (EU) 2024/622, is a global mechanism aiming to stabilize CO₂ emissions from international aviation.
It is the first global market-based scheme that applies to aviation and it requires airline operators to monitor, report, and offset emissions that exceed 2019 levels, supporting climate-neutral growth in aviation.
Key aspects
- Emissions Monitoring & Reporting: Operators must monitor and report CO₂ emissions from international flights on an annual basis.
- Offsetting Requirements: Emissions above a set baseline must be offset through the purchase of eligible carbon credits from approved programs.
- Annual Verification: Emissions reports must be independently verified.
- Phased Implementation: CORSIA is implemented in phases, starting with voluntary participation (2021–2026) and moving to mandatory participation (from 2027 onward for most states).
- Global Standardization: Provides a uniform international framework to reduce aviation’s climate impact and ensure fair competition.
Applicability
- CORSIA is applicable to airline operators emitting more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, from international flights flying between participating states.
