Design of Wastewater Treatment Facilities
Wastewater treatment and disposal are critical measures for water protection. The discharge of wastewater from municipal and industrial treatment plants and of contaminated stormwater into water bodies in Austria is regulated by the Water Rights Act (WRG 1959, as amended) and requires a permit.
Our Services:
- Customized consulting and proposed solutions for a wide variety of challenges, taking other infrastructure into account
- Development of wastewater disposal concepts
- Preparation of wastewater disposal projects for submission, including participation in negotiations with authorities
- Processing of grant applications
- Detailed design
- Tendering and participation in the awarding of contracts
- Overall supervision during the construction phase and on-site construction supervision
- Preparation of documentation for the final water law review, including participation in the review hearing
- Preparation of documentation for the technical acceptance inspection (funding), including participation in the acceptance inspection hearing
Operation of Small-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plants
To ensure that a small wastewater treatment plant is operated in compliance with regulations and the law, the following points must generally be taken into account:
- The plant operator must perform weekly/monthly operational checks and maintain an operational logbook.
- If the operator does not have their own qualified wastewater treatment personnel available for annual maintenance of the system, a maintenance contract must be concluded with an authorized specialist company.
- In the case of third-party monitoring, the system’s functionality and treatment performance must be verified once a year under increased load (this is usually carried out by the same company as part of the maintenance contract).
- Proper disposal of sewage sludge, including documentation.
- The system must be inspected by a qualified expert at least every 5 years in accordance with § 134 WRG 1959, as amended. A report on the findings must be submitted to the competent authority (online) without being requested.
Normative basis and applicable regulations:
- ÖNORM B 2502-1: Small-scale wastewater treatment plants (domestic wastewater treatment plants) for systems up to 50 population equivalents (PE) – On-site constructed systems – Application, design, construction, and operation
- ÖNORM B 2505: Sewage treatment plants – Intermittently fed soil filters (“plant-based sewage treatment plants”) – Application, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and inspection
- ÖNORM B 2508: Wastewater treatment plants – Small wastewater treatment plants for 51 to 500 population equivalents – Supplementary provisions to ÖNORM EN 12255 (all parts) for design, construction, testing, and operation
- Regulation of the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Forestry on the General Limitation of Wastewater Discharges into Watercourses and Public Sewer Systems (General Wastewater Discharge Regulation – AAEV)
- Water Rights Act (WRG 1959, as amended)
