The condition of the pipe coating on existing pipeline sections is checked by means of short-term polarization of the pipe material. This requires the collection of material parameters such as the pipe’s nominal diameter, outer diameter, type of pipe coating, surface area per meter of length, and soil type.
Defective coatings can lead to contact between metal and electrolyte and thus to external corrosion. A temporary protective system is set up to integrate a new pipeline. If a measured value falls below a critical threshold, a defect is suspected.
