EPD certification consulting
The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification is a document for communicating the environmental impacts of a product in a standardised and verified way, based on alife cycle analysis (LCA). We can therefore say that theEPD is the certification of the LCA study.
Through EPD certification, the environmental impacts of the product are communicated in a standardised and comparable manner. This is why EPD-certified products are strategically positioned in the market. For this reason, EPD is increasingly demand from B2B customers and in the public tenders regulated by the Green Public Produrement.
Ollum supports companies in carrying out an LCA study and in the EPD certification process, also assisting them in choosing the most suitable solution for the context. In some cases the best strategy can be asingle EPD, in other cases anaverage EPD, while for companies with many similar products it may be more effective to develop an LCA Tool to make the process faster and more scalable.
In special cases, when there is no suitable PCR for the product category, we can also support in the PCR development with the chosen programme operator.
Why should you get an EPD certification?
Relying on our EPD consultants to obtain the Environmental Product Declaration can lead to a number of competitive advantages for your company.
Let us look at some of them:
Green Public Procurement compliance
In many sectors, especially in the construction industry, EPD certification is a relevant element to meet the Minimum Environmental Criteria and strengthen product positioning in public tenders.
Better positioning in B2B markets
The EPD enables the communication of verified and comparable LCA environmental data, which is increasingly demanded by B2B clients, designers and technical stakeholders. Possessing an EPD certification therefore makes the product much more competitive on the market.
More transparency and brand strengthening
Obtaining EPD certification demonstrates your commitment to sustainability, increasing reputation and trust in your brand. It is in fact one of the most recognized environmental labels in the world, as it is based on the scientific calculation of environmental impacts.
Identifying inefficiencies
The LCA study underlying the EPD allows inefficiencies and waste to be identified, providing the basis for developing improvement strategies, with a view to the circular economy and ecodesign.
Preparing for regulatory demands
Environmental transparency obligations are increasing in the EU: for example, in Sweden, EPDs are already mandatory for construction products. The Ecodesign Regulation, as well as the CPR Regulation, with the introduction of the Digital Product Passport, will make the inclusion of environmental information mandatory. Having an EPD will facilitate compliance with future requirements.
LEED and BREEAM credits
In specific project contexts, products with EPDs can contribute to credits in building sustainability protocols such as LEED and BREEAM.
Who can obtain EPD certification?
All companies interested in transparently communicate the environmental impact of their products or services can embark on the path to EPD certification.
To obtain an EPD, it is essential to have detailed information on the life cycle of the product to be certified. Ollum’s EPD consultants support you on this path, carrying out the LCA studies necessary and preparing you for the assessment by the certification body, which is essential for the final validation.

2. Data collection and LCA study
We collect all necessary product life cycle information according to the applicable PCR and we develop the LCA study, analysing consumption, emissions, resource use and other relevant environmental impacts.
3. Declaration drafting and verification support
We transform the results of the LCA study into the documentation required for EPD certification and we prepare you for the verification phase by the accredited body.

Once the verification is complete, we support you in enhancing the EPD within your business and sustainability strategy to maximise its usefulness to customers, planners and stakeholders.
Which standards des EPD follow?
Automated EPD certification: EPD / LCA TOOL
For companies with many similar products, may be more efficient in some cases develop an LCA Tool or EPD Tool, so as to speed up the production of environmental studies and declarations and make the process more scalable.

FDES certification
Ollum can also support you in obtaining the FDES certification (Fiche Déclaration Environnementale et Sanitaire) for building products intended for French market. Similar to EPD, FDES is based on Life calculations Cycle Assessment (LCA), but in addition to information on environmental impacts, it also requires health information. The FDES must be verified by an accredited auditor and then published on the French government’s INIES website, where FDES for construction products are disseminated.
PEP Ecopassport
Ollum can also support you in obtaining certification PEP Ecopassport for the electrotechnical and electronic products for the building industry, such as HVAC equipment, lighting, and energy management systems. Similar to the EPD, the PEP Ecopassport is based on calculations of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and provides transparent and verified information on the environmental impacts of the product throughout its entire lifecycle. The declaration must be verified by an accredited third-party verifier and, once validated, is published in the official PEP Ecopassport database, where it can be freely consulted by designers, contracting authorities, and major clients.
