General informationGeneral informationangle down red

  • In Austria, containers with volumes ranging from 1 m³ to 1000 m³ are in use. These are differentiated according to the type of installation and the corrosion protection measures:
    • Above-ground tanks with paint coating
    • Underground or partially underground tanks with epoxy resin coating (according to DIN 4681) and cathodic corrosion protection (mandatory for all liquid gas tanks in operation from June 1, 2020)
    • Buried or partially buried tanks with bitumen coating (according to DIN 30673) and cathodic corrosion protection
    • Liquefied gas containers are subject to the Pressure Equipment Act DGG BGBl. No. 161/2015 and must be inspected at regular intervals by an accredited inspection body in accordance with ISO 17020. After passing the inspection, the containers receive an inspection chain and may continue to be operated.
    • Containers without a test chain will no longer be filled by the liquefied gas supplier (DGÜW-V §49 (8)).

liquefied petroleum gas tank

The following tests are performed on liquefied gas containers:

  • Initial operational test after the container is placed on the market, consisting of an external inspection supplemented by a check of the lawful placing on the market and an initial assessment of the installation
  • External inspection, consisting of an assessment of the installation, a visual inspection to assess damage, leaks, and corrosion. For underground tanks, the walls are assessed by testing the cathodic corrosion protection.
  • Internal inspection and pressure testing are performed in the form of acoustic emission testing.
  • Inspection of cathodic corrosion protection, consisting of determining the protective current and potential measurements using a reference electrode.

Inspection intervals for liquefied petroleum gas containers

The inspection intervals for liquefied gas containers are regulated in the special provisions of the Pressure Equipment Monitoring Ordinance, Federal Law Gazette II No. 420/2004, as amended by Federal Law Gazette II No. 165/2015, Annex 3:

  • Liquefied gas tanks up to 13 m³

    • External inspection every 3 years
    • Internal inspection and pressure test (acoustic emission test) every 12 or 15 years

The intervals for the general inspection are based on the “quality” of the tank and are determined by the inspection body on the basis of the tank documents (pressure vessel test book, declaration of conformity).

Liquefied gas tanks over 13 m³

    • External inspection every 3 years
    • Internal inspection and pressure test (acoustic emission test) every 12 years

    Cathodic corrosion protection

    • KKS system inspection every 3 years
    • Annual interim inspection of external current KKS systems (in accordance with ÖNORM EN 13636 and ÖVGW Guideline G B 331, both of which have been declared binding in the DGÜW-V)
