Hydrogen: A Secure Future
Hydrogen produced from renewable energy sourcescan be manufactured, transported, used, and stored on an industrial scale at the regional level .
As part of a European energy network, hydrogen from renewable sources makes a significant contribution to achieving national and European climate goals. Likewise, European hydrogen networks help ensure energy supply and thus contribute to security of supply.
Safety and environmental requirements are well-established and proven through experience gained in the chemical industry, the steel and metal industry, the glass and electronics industry, the food industry, and mobility applications. Existing regulations, as well as those adapted to the changing market, support the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy and provide planning and project certainty along the value chains.
Based on the national hydrogen strategy, Austriaplans to build 1 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030.Establishing hydrogen production as an integral part of the energy system is intended tostrengthen Austriaas abusiness and technology hub andsupportthe development of hydrogen technologies. The plan isto replace fossil hydrogen as extensively as possible in energy-intensive industries by 2030.

with our expertise and experience…
Production:
Until now, hydrogen has been produced primarily throughsteam reforming.Due to the use of fossil fuels (natural gas, crude oil) as feedstock, this production method is associated with significant CO2 emissions and will therefore play a diminishing role in the future hydrogen economy.
Current developments focus on low-carbon or carbon-free production methods. At present, electrolysis is the primary focus in project implementation. However, the experts at TÜV AUSTRIA also support a wide range of other renewable production methods.
…across the entire hydrogen value chain
Transport:
The transport of renewable hydrogen to consumers and storage facilities will primarily take place domestically via pipelines. Imports and transit will also occur via pipeline systems. The repurposing of existing gas infrastructure (natural gas lines, pipelines, compressor stations, pig gates, gate valve stations, metering stations, gas pressure regulating equipment) as well as the construction of dedicated hydrogen infrastructurerequire a thorough understanding of national and international regulations. TÜV AUSTRIA is represented by its experts on the relevant committees and is therefore familiar with existing, emerging, and planned regulations. Your project is in the best of hands with us.
Application:
With the growing hydrogen industry, H2 applications are rapidly increasing . Ensuring the operational safety of plants and facilities requires extensive and long-standing experience in the evaluation of materials (metals, plastics) and their behavior under operating conditions. Systems for feeding, blending, and filling hydrogen play a central role. The safety of electrical systems, fire protection, occupational safety, and emissions/immissions round out the comprehensive hydrogen portfolio of the TÜV AUSTRIA Group.
Storage:
Storage plays a central role in ensuring that hydrogen can be used safely and reliably as an energy carrier.Depending on the application, hydrogen is stored in gaseous or liquid form—under high pressure, at low temperatures, or in chemically bound form (e.g., metal hydrides).
This applies tostorage systems that are part of production processes as well asto temporary storage facilities designed to relieve the strain on power grids. Geological storage facilities enable the seasonal balancing of production and consumption. The challenges involved in hydrogen storage are diverse, and TÜV AUSTRIA supports you with extensive expertise.
Product Certification
When certifying hydrogen as a product, the focus is usually on the CO2 footprint associated with its production.Proof of origin is often required by the market to demonstrate regional value creation or to provide stakeholders with evidence of planned production volumes.
Certification of Systems & Components
As the hydrogen economy gains momentum, a key question is the hydrogen compatibility of components, equipment, machinery, and facilities. TÜV AUSTRIA combines state-of-the-art laboratory technology and testing infrastructure to offer manufacturers and operators complementary areas of expertise, including electrical engineering, mechanics, environmental simulation, automotive, information technology, and IT/OT security.
TÜV AUSTRIA’s certificates and test reports enjoy the highest recognition both nationally and internationally and stand for strict quality standards and safety.
