Inspection of extraction systems
Testing extraction systems
Extraction systems are used in a wide variety of areas in the workplace to protect people from the health effects of hazardous substances. Only extraction systems that are regularly maintained and inspected can guarantee adequate protection.
The gaseous and particulate substances (welding fumes) produced during welding and related processes can endanger the health of welders and other workers in the vicinity.
Extraction systems serve to reduce pollutants in the workplace. Hazardous substances must be replaced or used in a closed system in accordance with hazard prevention measures. If this is not possible and hazardous gases/vapours are released, an extraction system is required as a precautionary measure.
Legal basis for testing extraction systems in Austria
The necessity of testing extraction or mechanical ventilation systems or extraction devices for the removal of hazardous substances is regulated in the Limit Value Ordinance 2021 (GKV 2021). Section 32 of the ordinance essentially requires the following:
- Testing for effectiveness before initial commissioning (acceptance test)
- Annual recurring testing (at intervals of no more than 15 months)
- Tests must be documented (the scope and results of the tests must be clear and comprehensible). The results of the inspection must be documented in a test report.
- The tests must be carried out by suitable, competent and authorised persons in accordance with the rules of technology.
