LEED assessment for products and materials
In which region do you need this solution?
LEED assessment for products and materials
We help you understand and demonstrate how your product contributes to LEED credits, making it more competitive in certified projects.
- Check if your products can be used in LEED-certified projects
- Respond to requests for LEED products or LEED materials from designers and contractors
- Access specifications of LEED-certified buildings
LEED assessment for products and materials
This service is a type ofanalysis of the technical and environmental characteristics of a product or building material, which aims to verify whether and how it can contribute to the credits of the LEED certification.
LEED certification applies to buildings, not to individual materials, yet in informal parlance designers, companies and general contractors often demand from their suppliers LEED certified products, LEED materials or a LEED certification of products.
These are misnomers, but widespread. There are in fact no LEED-certified products: building materials and construction products can however contribute to the building’s LEED credits.
Ollum supports manufacturers of building materials and components in the LEED mapping of products, analysing the available technical and environmental information. In particular, we analyse:
- Availability of EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)
- emissions VOC of materials
- documentation on recycled content or circularity
- compliance with REACH and other material regulations
- any technical data sheets and environmental certifications available
This analysis makes it possible to identify to which LEED credits the product can contribute and what documentation to provide to designers.
Why is LEED analysis for construction products worthwhile?
Many companies receive requests for products or materials for LEED-certified projects, but they do not know exactly how to respond.
Responding to requests for “LEED products”
Designers and companies often request LEED materials or LEED-certified products. Mapping makes it possible to understand whether and how the product contributes to LEED credits and what documentation to provide.
Enhancing EPDs already available
Many companies possess EPDs or other environmental data, but do not know how to use them in LEED projects. Mapping helps link this information to certification credits.
Accessing LEED specifications
More and more buildings require LEED certification. Demonstrating how products contribute to credits can facilitate entry into project specifications.
What steps does LEED analysis of materials and products involve?
LEED assessment for building materials and products involves the following steps:
1. Analysis of products and available documentation
We review the company’s products and available technical and environmental documentation, such as EPDs, data sheets, certifications and material data.
2. Verification of applicable LEED credits
We check how products can contribute to LEED certification credits, particularly in the area of Materials & Resources.
3. Valorisation of environmental data
We organise technical information so that it can be used by designers in the LEED certified projects.
4. Support in responding to planners and companies
We provide guidance and useful documentation to respond correctly to requests for materials or products for LEED projects.
Evolution of LEED requirements in new protocol versions
With LEED v5 it is no longer enough to have an EPD: the environmental performance of the product is also assessed against industry benchmarks.
In this context, having EPD product specifications becomes increasingly competitive with average or worst-case EPDs.
