Since 2019, TÜV AUSTRIA has been supporting the construction and further development of the Lycée Technique Béthel de Nanoro in the southern Sahel region and has donated €15,000 again in 2026.
This technical secondary school, which offers training in electronics, electrical engineering, civil engineering, building and architectural design, automotive technology, and accounting, is now in its third year of operation.
The first crucial step: finding water
Before construction of the school could begin, a first well was drilled in 2020 – an absolute prerequisite for construction, operation, and supply.
At a depth of 80 meters, the team found the best mineral water. The well, originally intended only for the school, now supplies more than 2,000 people from the surrounding villages who come from far away every day.
The second well – construction has now begun
Since the school will eventually have to cater for around 900 students, including 120 boarders, it was clear early on that a second well would be essential.
On February 19, 2026, water was found again, and construction of the second well has officially begun!
Despite the lack of a road to the school, the project has the most important resources: water, solar energy for the pumps, and dedicated teachers who make the school possible.
Soon, the school will produce its first graduates.
The drilling rig was initially positioned at a promising location, identifiable by the vegetation.
Two wells – water for entire communities
Both wells not only ensure everyday school life. They improve the quality of life of entire village communities and give thousands of people health, prospects, and a future.
The sustainability of the well is guaranteed by the fact that it is part of the culture to use retention basins to dam up the otherwise dry river valleys (wadis) during the two rainy seasons. This allows for two harvests per rainy season. The seeping water (from these basins) feeds the groundwater. The depth of 80 m ensures perfect filtration and mineralization. The well is replenished with each rainfall with a time delay.

Bethel High School Opening in Sight
Three years after the start of construction, the Nanoro project is nearing completion. The buildings have been erected, the photovoltaic system has been installed, and in October Bethel High School will open its doors to the first 300 students. TÜV AUSTRIA has been supporting the project since 2019.
