"MAK measurement: Determination of the concentration of gaseous and dusty working materials. Limit value comparison measurements, control measurements"

MAK measurement

The concentration of hazardous substances in the air at the workplace can be assessed using limit values. In Austria, MAK and TRK values are bindingly specified in accordance with the Limit Values Ordinance (GKV). MAK values (maximum workplace concentration) or TRK values (technical reference concentration) apply to hazardous substances such as gas, vapor, or suspended matter in the air at the workplace. They serve as a basis for protective measures and metrological monitoring.

MAK values are threshold values which, if complied with, generally do not give rise to concerns about health effects. If no such threshold value can be derived for a hazardous substance, a TRK value must be set. This is based purely on technical feasibility and does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the likelihood of health damage occurring even if the value is complied with. They are only set for hazardous substances for which no toxicologically and occupational health-based MAK values can be established according to the current state of scientific knowledge.

Gaseous substances

In addition to active sampling, passive sampling is also used for the metrological determination of volatile substances in the air we breathe. In combination with sophisticated laboratory analysis, it is possible to monitor all substances contained in the Limit Value Ordinance.

Dusty substances

Monitoring of working materials both as an inhalable dust fraction (E fraction) and as an alveolar dust fraction (A fraction). It is also possible to measure fiber concentrations.

Depending on the issue at hand, the dust fractions determined can then be examined for their constituents using wet chemistry.

Daily average values and short-term values

MAK and TRK values refer to a specific assessment period (usually 8 hours per day/40 hours per week). Within the assessment period, an average concentration value is considered; concentration peaks within the assessment period may therefore also exceed theMAK value for a short time. For health protection reasons, however, it is necessary to limit the concentration peaks as well.

This is where short-term values come in. Short-term values are average values (Miw) or instantaneous values (Mow). Instantaneous values are peak values that must not be exceeded at any time. Instantaneous values are specified for substances that have an immediate effect and are highly irritating locally.

Measurements

The following measurement methods are used:

  • Limit value comparison measurements: These are measurements taken at workplaces where exposure to a substance for which a MAK value or TRK valuehas been specified cannot be reliably ruled out.
These measurements are representative measurements that should be carried out at representative locations under representative conditions and for which measurement points and reference measurement results should be specified for any necessary control measurements.
  • Control measurements: are measurements that are determined at appropriate intervals based on the identification and assessment of the hazards identified and documented in the safety and health protection document. Control measurements can also be carried out using simpler measurement methods, but can also be new limit value comparison measurements.
  • Continuous measurements
  • Mobile measurements
  • Metrological monitoring, such as monitoring the extraction capacity of an extraction system
