TÜV AUSTRIA Competence Center for “Mechanical Product Safety”:
Pendulum impact test
Product Safety – Collision Test
The pendulum impact test is used to evaluate the safety of bicycle trailers. It simulates a collision with a car in the event of a side or rear impact at a speed of 25 km/h.
Evaluation of results:
The following factors are taken into account in the evaluation of results:
- Deformation: The dynamic deformation of the trailer must not exceed 10 percent of the trailer’s total width.
- Stability: No sharp edges or large openings that could cause injury are permitted inside the trailer.
- Child protection: Ensuring the safety of the occupants is the top priority in the test procedures.
The pendulum impact test, a test procedure designed to ensure the passive safety of bicycle trailers for transporting children, is mandated by the German Road Traffic Regulations (§67 StVZO, Guidelines for the Use of Trailers Behind Bicycles) but is also a component of the GS certification. The GS mark stands for tested safety and confirms that the applicable legal mechanical and chemical requirements have been verified. The applicable standards and laws relevant to the product are taken into account.
