Surface drainage: Planning of infiltration and retention systems
Infiltration is used in particular to drain surface water from residential areas and traffic areas (surface drainage) when there is no suitable sewer system or receiving water body available. This method is also used to counteract a reduction in groundwater recharge due to surface sealing and to approximate the natural water cycle.
Even before precipitation hits the earth’s surface, it accumulates substances from the atmosphere in the form of fine particles and aerosols. Furthermore, precipitation can carry pollutants from contaminated surfaces. The water must therefore be pre-treated before infiltration.
Directly connected to infiltration systems are retention measures to retain rainwater and feed it into the infiltration system in a controlled manner.
