SBTi Consulting: Support for setting and validating targets
We offer consulting services for SBTi target validation, supporting companies in the definition, submission and validation of objectives of emission reductions according to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is the leading international standard for setting emissions reduction targets that are consistent with climate science and the Paris Agreement.
Companies undertaking an SBTi pathway define target SBTi based on science, generally structured into near-term objectives and, where relevant, longer-term net-zero objectives. Validation occurs through the verification of documentation by SBTi.
Ollum offers highly specialized SBTi advice and supports businesses in suitability analysis, in defining the target SBTi and in the preparation of the validation path. In particular:
- Preliminary SBTi suitability assessment
- Definition of target SBTi near-term and net-zero
- Alignment with SBTi criteria and the Paris Agreement
- Preparation and submission of documentation for SBTi validation
The SBTi pathway is often requested by large clients, international supply chains, investors, and stakeholders who want to assess the robustness and credibility of a company’s SBTi goals. Furthermore, SBTi recognition is also valued in frameworks and questionnaires such as CDP and EcoVadis.
What are the benefits of Science Based Targets validation?
The definition and validation of Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) corporate emissions reduction targets can bring several benefits to businesses, including:
International recognition for its climate goals
SBTi validation allows us to demonstrate that emission reduction targets are built according to internationally recognised scientific criteria, strengthening the credibility and transparency of the climate pathway.
Respond to the requests of customers, investors, and markets
Increasingly, major clients, investors, and international supply chains are requesting formalised and recognised climate targets. This is particularly true in certain sectors such as food, large-scale retail, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, although it is not a dynamic limited to these areas.
Reduce the risk of greenwashing
Having stated climate targets that are not validated can appear less robust in the eyes of the market. SBTi validation helps to demonstrate that a company’s climate commitments are aligned with a recognised standard and are not simply self-declared.
The SBTi validation pathway includes the following steps:
Our service of consulting for the definition and validation of SBTi targets it is divided into the following steps:
1. SBTi pathway suitability analysis
We will assess the company’s emission profile, organisational scope, and the consistency of the path with the SBTi requirements, so as to understand if the conditions for starting the target validation exist.
2. Corporate Carbon Footprint Calculation
If the company does not already have an emissions inventory, we start by calculation of the carbon footprint according to the GHG Protocol, including Scope 1, 2 and, where relevant, Scope 3. This step is fundamental for defining coherent and verifiable SBTi targets.
3. Definition of climate targets
We support the company in defining emission reduction targets, distinguishing between Target near-term and when relevant, target net-zero, based on applicable methodologies.
4. Methodological and documentary alignment
Let’s check the path consistency with the SBTi criteria and with the sectoral methodologies available, particularly relevant for sectors with higher emissions intensity or with dedicated rules.
5. Preparation and submission for validation
We will prepare the necessary documentation and support the company in the submission of the dossier for validation of SBTi targets.
SBTi standards and methodologies
In the SBTi pathway, several standards are applied, including Corporate Net-Zero Standard, SBTi FLAG, SBTi Buildings and other sector-specific methodologies.
is also being updated Corporate Net-Zero Standard (Version 2), which will introduce new requirements and whose adoption is foreseen as a mandatory reference in the coming years (indicatively from 2028).
