Planning of wells
A well is used to tap groundwater at depths ranging from a few meters to great depths of well over 100 m. The following types of wells can be distinguished:
- Pile-driven or percussion wells (garden irrigation)
- Shaft wells for the development of mostly shallow groundwater bodies
- Vertical filter wells (drilled wells) for tapping deep or thick groundwater bodies
- Horizontal filter wells for shallow aquifers and very large volumes of water.
The following points must be observed for cost-effective installation and carefree operation:
- Selection of the optimum well location and suitable well type
- Correct dimensioning of the well to be constructed
- Construction of the well in accordance with the latest state of the art, taking particular care during well construction and well sealing (especially for drinking water wells)
- Correct commissioning of the well (well development) and determination of the future operating parameters
- Selection of the appropriate technical equipment (pump, control system, water storage tank)
- Construction of a well shaft or well house to protect the well and accommodate the technical equipment
The specialist knowledge and experience of a well master are essential for correct construction and many years of problem-free operation. Incorrectly constructed wells or wells destroyed by incorrect operation can usually only be renovated at great expense. If the groundwater body has been contaminated by polluted surfaces due to inadequate sealing of the well, the well site may be unusable for a long time and the well lost.
Even a well-dimensioned and correctly constructed well is subject to certain signs of ageing during correct operation, which reduce the performance of the well. Good documentation during the construction of the well, continuous monitoring and documentation of the operation as well as pumping tests carried out at regular intervals are the best prerequisites for finding the right time for well regeneration.
