CO2 Footprint: Your advantagesCO2 Footprint: Your advantagesangle down red

With the CO2 footprint, we determine exactly where and how many emissions are generated in your company and can initiate appropriate reduction measures

Unavoidable emissions can be offset on the basis of the results report in order to make your company climate-neutral. A CO2 balance sheet creates transparency for business partners and customers and thus strengthens trusting cooperation.

CO2 Footprint: Three scopesCO2 Footprint: Three scopesangle down red

In accordance with ISO 14064 and the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, emissions from three different scopes are taken into account when calculating the carbon footprint.

  1. Emissions from the operation and use of the company’s own vehicle fleet and the use of self-generated energy(Scope 1)
  2. Climate impact of purchased energy, i.e. electricity, heating and cooling(Scope 2)
  3. CO2 emissions from business travel and other purchased services and products(Scope 3)

Depending on the respective scope, different market instruments such as green electricity certificates of origin or emission reduction certificates from climate protection projects can be used. In this way, you can improve your own emissions balance or underline your own commitment to greater sustainability.

"By verifying the carbon footprint, you gain clarity about which activities in the company cause how much CO2."

Verification of carbon footprint

By calculating the corporate carbon footprint, you gain clarity about which activities in the company cause how much CO2. For companies that are committed to sustainability, the carbon footprint is an important tool for assessing their climate impact. It is therefore a central component of the life cycle assessment and sustainability reporting. A carbon footprint makes it possible to identify high-emission business areas and potential savings.

Carbon Footprint : Three scopes

Based on ISO 14064 and the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), we calculate and balance the emissions for the CO2 footprint (GHG balance) from three different scopes.

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from our own or controlled sources, e.g. through the combustion of fuels in company-owned vehicles or facilities.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the purchase of purchased energy such as electricity, heat or cooling generated outside the company.
  • Scope 3: All other indirect emissions along the value chain, e.g. from business travel, purchased goods or the use of products sold

Depending on the respective scope, different market instruments such as green electricity certificates of origin or emission reduction certificates from climate protection projects can be used. In this way, you can improve your own emissions balance or underline your own commitment to greater sustainability.

Verification of product carbon footprint (ISO 14067)

The global climate targets for 2050 are aimed at a decarbonized world, which is why all products and services must be assessed in terms of their climate impact. As a result, the product carbon footprint (PCF) is becoming increasingly important.

The PCF according to ISO 14067 is the most established method for determining the climate impact of a product. During the entire life cycle of a product – from raw material extraction to recycling or disposal – climate-relevant impacts arise in the form of greenhouse gas emissions. Depending on the relevance of a product’s use phase, we recommend the cradle-to-grave or cradle-to-customer end-of-life approach for the assessment. The Product Carbon Footprint helps to identify and analyze these impacts and to reduce them with the right measures or (ideally) to avoid them altogether.

When calculating the carbon footprint, a distinction is also made between direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1-3):

  • Scope 1 considers all emissions caused directly by the company (combustion of fossil fuels, emissions from chemical and physical processes, etc.)
  • Scope 2 analyzes the indirect emissions caused by external providers of electricity, heat, cooling or steam.
  • Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions that arise either in the upstream supply chain or during product use (e.g. the purchase of products).

Greenhouse gases: more than justCO2

The carbon footprint is not just about carbon dioxide emissions, but also about other greenhouse gases. The climate impact of the various greenhouse gases is expressed inCO2 equivalents, as the gases have different global warming potentials. The (relative)global warming potential ( GWP) or CO2 equivalent of a chemical compound is a measure of its relative contribution to the greenhouse effect, i.e. its average warming effect on the earth’s atmosphere over a certain period of time (usually 100 years).

  • Methane (CH4)
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O)
  • Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
  • Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
  • Sulphur hexaflouride (SF6)
  • Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3)
